December 2016

Clipper employees braved the cold to volunteer their time ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. A total of 16 employees signed up to work in pairs for a total of 28 hours collecting donations.  The Salvation Army helps raise funds to support holiday activities and other local programming throughout the year.  School, church and service groups, along with many individuals volunteer to ring the Red Kettle Bell over the holiday season.  According to Salvation Army's website, "The bell ringing season starts each November and runs through Christmas Eve, when the red kettles are packed away for the season. Volunteers are the difference between an empty kettle and one that raises about $30 per hour – enough to provide a family with two bags of groceries, or shelter an individual for a night."

Clipper collected over 1000 pounds of food and supplies for local veterans.  Food items were delivered to the Linn County VA Pantry, and while there Clipper employees met with VA employees to help stock the pantry that so many vets frequent. Clipper is also partnering again this holiday season with Families Helping Families.

Clipper hosted students from Kennedy High School who participated in the Iowa Quality Center Student TEAMS program.  A big thank you to the IQC for bringing Karter Donahue,  Andrew Seiler and Afnan Elsheikh to work with us this year!

Iowa Quality Center Student Teams

Clipper hosted students from Kennedy High School who participated in the Iowa Quality Center Student TEAMS program.  These students work with professional facilitators from the IQC, learn the vocabulary, methods and quality tools used throughout business to dissolve problems.  They are exposed to the PDSA cycle of continual improvement and a systematic 9 step approach that can be deployed to solve any problem.  Students learn the Deming Principles of Profound Knowledge and relate it to the ability to think in a “systems” manner.  Following the 2 day training, students are deployed to a sponsoring business that assign a project to the team.  The project requires them to use the approach to improvement that they learned as well as working as a team.  The outcome of the business experience is a presentation with a theory of improvement that the students have developed based on the data and information provided to them or collected by them.  Thank you to the Kennedy students – we enjoyed hosting you and appreciate the information your provided in your final presentation!
