CLIPPER EXPANDS PRODUCT LINE IN SUPPORT OF WIND ENERGY'S INCREASING GLOBAL GROWTH
Two Additional 2.5 MW ‘Liberty®’ Wind Turbine Designs Receive Germanischer Lloyd Certification
CARPINTERIA, CALIFORNIA April 19, 2006 Clipper Windpower today announced the broadening of its 2.5 MW Liberty Series wind turbine product line to include two new models of wind turbines, the C89 and C96. Recently awarded Germanischer Lloyd certification to international industry standards, the C89 and C96 join the Company’s successful C93 model, which is currently in production at Clipper’s Cedar Rapids, Iowa manufacturing facility.
“The use of wind energy has been expanding at a rate averaging 28% over the past five years alone” said Amir Mikhail, Ph.D., Clipper’s senior vice president and chief technology engineer. “At the same time, the wind technology marketplace is demanding a higher level of sophistication in the areas of efficiency, reliability and versatility.”
“The Liberty Series, with its expanded choice of rotor sizes, gives customers the ability to maximize their power generation in a much wider range of wind regimes. This type of optimization is becoming increasingly important, particularly in Europe where low wind resources are more prevalent” he added.
Clipper’s C89, developed for Class IA, extreme wind speeds and the C96, developed for Class IIB lower winds, have been certified by Germanischer Lloyd for a 20-year fatigue life; Clipper’s C93 unit, for Class II A, mid-range wind regimes holds an industry record with certification for a 30-year life.
The Liberty Series, designed to address current industry gearbox and other component issues, mitigates gearbox stresses through Clipper’s patented Quantum Distributed Generation Drivetrain (“DGEN-Q”). The Clipper units also offer proprietary variable speed operation in a more efficient manner than today’s standard wind turbines. Simpler, more effective grid integration is achieved through power factor regulation technology with ride-through capability which exceeds current and planned standards for electric grid operation. Clipper’s permanent magnet generator technology delivers higher powertrain efficiency, and a 2-ton on-board crane simplifies maintenance and significantly reduces associated costs. The 2.5 MW Liberty turbine installation can be accomplished with a crane sized for most commercial 1.5 MW units.
